Storytime!

In fall of 2024, I chose to renovate the interior of my Sprinter van (that I’ve had for over three years) to make it more comfortable for full time living. I left my apartment in Oakland to give myself less financial stress (haaa!!!) and more mobility and freedom to travel, while maintaining my connections in the SF Bay Area.

Ready to embark on one of the longest journeys I’ve taken in my van, and after investing a large part of my finances into prepping myself to tattoo at events, festivals, and conventions, I suddenly incurred huge, unexpected bills because of big van troubles! Yikes! This beloved Sprinter van is both my only+primary vehicle/mode of transport, it is also my cabin on wheels, safe space, adventure-mobile, and home to me and Saiti dog.

Luna the Sprinter is a 2006 dually, meaning she is approaching 20 years old, and she is really expensive to tow (requires a flat bed).

The week of January 15th, about to embark upon my journey to Arizona to work the Tuscon Gem and Mineral Show, I took Luna in for maintenance in Los Angeles and to work on some issues that seemed looming.

❖ I had to do nearly $4000 of urgently necessary repairs in order to be safe on the road.

Two days later, leaking revealed fuel line issues. Hoses replaced.

Two days after that, coolant hose issues. Replaced.

Next day, yet again, more leaking!!! Until my coolant reservoir was completely empty!

As often happens, when it rains, it pours.

❖ Then on January 24th in San Diego, van-a-Luna required $2200 worth of work to fully revamp the coolant system (all but the pump, which seems to have been replaced not long before I bought it).

This is super necessary, because as the coolant system is a pressurised system, each new part reveals the next weakest link in the chain, causing system failure. It’s not possible to drive if the engine is overheating, so this is urgent work!

I know van life can seem dreamy, but being stranded on the side of the road, and draining your savings is definitely not glamourous.

I need a few thousand dollars as a buffer at any given point, if some other mechanical issue arises, or if I need to get towed (which can amount to thousands of dollars, if for example I’m on a long desolate road). Not to mention if, goddess forbid, I have any physical accident which hinders my ability to work.

Diesel vehicles are a whole other ballgame, mechanically speaking—and Sprinters also require expertise to know how to properly fix and maintain them. In the last week of January, I completely emptied my savings and maxed out my credit card to work on the van :( S.O.S.!!!

So I am launching a raffle! Yippie!!!

I like to do these every so often, and I’d love to do it for fundraising for causes I believe in, but right now, I just gotta believe in myself, ya feel me??? LOL

  • Supporting your local art witch! As an independent artist, every dollar I have in hand, someone gave to me. I’m so grateful for what I do, for my clients, for their trust, and for this life. When challenges hit, sometimes we can get into a hole. This money will go to ensuring I have a little buffer in case any disaster hits on the road. I don’t have close blood family, I don’t have backup. I am my own backup, so I’m trying to pull money out of my butt rn and offer my services in whatever way possible to keep myself afloat.
